A logo that cost three times the original quote. A social media retainer with nothing measurable after six months. A strategy session that produced a 40-page PDF and no follow-through. If you have hired marketing help before, at least one of those probably sounds familiar.
So it is fair to ask: what does a marketing agency do for a small business, beyond sending invoices? Women's Journal put that question to us for a recent feature, and our answer is simple. Marketing either produces results, or it is just noise.
The Word "Agency" Tells You Almost Nothing
"Agency" covers everything from a solo freelancer posting to Instagram to a full-service firm running paid media across five channels. The label says very little about what you will actually get.
The more useful question is who will do the work. At many mid-size and larger agencies, senior people win the business and then hand it to junior staff who may never speak with your decision-makers again. That handoff is where a lot of strategy goes to die.
At One Eleven Creatives, Sarah and I lead every engagement directly. No account coordinators in the middle, no handoffs, and more than 20 years of combined agency experience on every call. We also keep the number of clients we take on at one time deliberately small.
What Does a Marketing Agency Do? Three Jobs
In the Women's Journal feature, we broke the work into three functional areas. Every task a good agency does should serve at least one of them.
- Visibility, or getting found. SEO, local SEO, press placements that earn authoritative backlinks, and channels like Pinterest that work more like a search engine than a feed. We have secured more than 40 media placements for clients, including Business Insider and CEO Weekly.
- Credibility, or turning attention into trust. Your website, LinkedIn profiles, press mentions and a clear brand narrative. Sarah is also a professional photographer, so how a brand looks across channels gets the same scrutiny as what it says.
- Consistency, or showing up reliably. Social content, editorial calendars and a publishing rhythm built for each channel. For one fine artist client, that consistency on Pinterest took her audience from zero to global reach in under 90 days.
If an agency cannot tell you which of these three jobs a deliverable serves, ask why you are paying for it. We wrote about how that plays out on Pinterest in Pinterest marketing for service businesses.
You Should Know Why Every Task Exists
Small business marketing is not just branding. You should know why each piece of work is being done and what it will cost you if it fails. If work cannot be tied to a real client outcome, it is decorating.
My own background shapes that view. Before One Eleven, I was a CMO at a Canadian technology consulting firm, and before that I ran a retail shop in the Czech Republic, in a language I was still learning. When you have to understand your buyers from the ground up, you stop caring about activity that looks busy and start caring about what moves people to act. Sarah brings the same discipline from public relations, agency account work and photography: strategy has to be specific enough to execute and honest enough to hold accountable.
That is the logic behind starting with brand positioning before anything gets posted, and behind a social media strategy that has a job beyond filling a calendar.
How to Judge Any Agency, Including Us
So, what does a marketing agency do when it is doing its job? Three things. It moves real numbers. The people doing the work can explain it to you plainly. And it holds itself accountable when results fall short.
No fluff, no generic playbooks, no vague deliverables. That is the standard behind every one of our marketing services, and it is the standard you should hold any agency to before you sign.
Which of the three jobs, visibility, credibility or consistency, is your business weakest at right now?
